OVERVIEW OF NKIDMC
The concept of private public partnership a development management company came into existence with the directives of the then President of Pakistan and the Government of Sindh, which is presently known as North Karachi Industrial Development & Management Company (NKIDMC). It has been assigned the task of rehabilitating and upgrading the existing infrastructure and identifying the projects for future needs in the industrial zone.
It is worthwhile to mention that for the first time, Government of Pakistan trusted on private sector and transferred substantial amount of funds to private sector and, resultantly, Government of Sindh sanctioned Rs. One Billion for distribution amongst the four Development & Management Companies (DMCs) for the development and improvement of industrial areas of Karachi, i.e., Rs. 250 million for each of the four DMCs. It was, no doubt, a big challenge for the private sector that it has to achieve the targets given by the Government to private sector.
Prior to the grant of funds, and for the last 25 years, the condition of the industrial infrastructure in the area was adversely deteriorated, as there were no streets and roads lights, no sewerage lines for proper storm water drainage, streets and roads were badly damaged and thus there was no concept of transportation. Subsequently, accepting the challenge, NKIDMC started planning for executing the developmental activities according to the requirements of the industrial area on self reliance basis, which involved rehabilitation and reconstruction of a large roads network, installation of streets lights to eliminate absolute darkness in the night, construction of footpaths to facilitate pedestrians and flow of transportation. In this context, the then City District Government under the leadership of City Nazim, Syed Mustafa Kamal played a significant role in the development of North Karachi Industrial Area.
Immediately after this implementation, planning was started by preparing 3 PCIs for the rehabilitation and reconstruction of roads; first PC-I costing Rs. 250 million was prepared for sectors, 12-C & 12-D, 6-B & 16-B. The second PC-I of Rs. 60.0 milliion was prepared for Sector 16-D in Gabol Town, whereas third PC-I amounting to Rs. 250 million was prepared for the construction of Roads 9100 & 9200, which is rapidly underway and about to complete very soon.
Moreover, being an exceptional project, the Company recently started the installation of solar energy lights on the roads and streets in the industrial area for keeping close monitoring of the movement of anti-social elements and miscreants and their exit control system for the effective security purpose. The Company’s further plan is to build a fire station and skilled labor facilities in the industrial area, establish 10-bed hospital for providing immediate medical treatment and also a vocational training institute for further improving the skills of labor community.
Regarding the above notable achievements of its targets, it was made possible with the concerted efforts of the Chief Executive Officer and the Directors of the Company - the list of Directors is as under:
